Time to Prepare

Saturday, September 2, 2023

Be prepared.

The old motto from the Boy Scouts rings especially true now.

September is National Preparedness Month.

Since September 11, 2001, the U.S. Government has taken steps to encourage all citizens to make their own survival preparations.

This year’s theme is “Preparing Older Adults” highlighting key challenges seniors can face when it comes to preparedness.

According to the American Red Cross, there are several factors that make older adults more vulnerable after disasters, including, a need for medications, a greater reliance on assistant devices such as walkers or glasses, as well as support from caregivers and others, and an increased likelihood of social isolation.

Be prepared.

Have a plan in place. Practice your plan.

Build an emergency supply kit.

Suggestions on items in your kit could include a battery powered radio, a first aid kit, a whistle to signal for help, and a manual can opener.

Also be sure you have a way to stay informed, especially for weather alerts.

Be prepared.

Learn skills, such as how to safely turn off utilities or use a fire extinguisher.

Emergencies and disasters can happen unexpectedly anytime and anywhere.

You may be fortunate enough to never experience a disaster of some sort, but it doesn’t hurt to have some sort of a plan.

It’s important.

Just check out an Eagle Scout medal, which represents the higher honor in Scouting.

Only two words appear.

Be prepared.

See you out there.
