Here comes the Eclipse

Saturday, April 6, 2024

It’s finally here.

The Eclipse weekend is upon us.

I must admit I’m looking forward to all the entertainment and events that will surround this phenomenon, however, I’m not really that excited about the eclipse itself.

For those of you that are, wonderful, enjoy the dark moment.

It reminds me of the time I was being pressured into riding Space Mountain at Disney World.

“It’s just a rollercoaster in the dark, Jeff,” they said.

They’re all rollercoasters in the dark for me. I’ve never opened my eyes once on one.

Here’s a few fun facts about the Eclipse I hope you enjoy.

Temperatures may drop.

Bring a jacket while you’re viewing it, because temps can drop quickly as the moon covers the sun. Most places see a temperature drop of around five to ten degrees.

There can be a change in the wind direction. First, the wind dies down as the moon gets closer to blocking the sun. After the moon reaches peak coverage, the wind starts to kick back up, often blowing in a different direction.

Animals become confused.

When the sky suddenly goes dark in the middle of the day, animals can become very confused. Crickets start chirping their evening song. Cows and horses begin bedding down for the night, while birds return to their roost.

There’s another rumor that states those who like to imbibe in adult beverages may begin their happy hour celebration early.

Remember, that’s just a rumor.

Weird shadows appear.

Most eyes will be glued to the sky, but take a moment to look at the ground. Shadows made by trees and other objects will cause a pinhole effect and be dappled with tiny crescents. You’ll see little rings of light everywhere.

Especially those folks who started happy hour early.

Enjoy the Eclipse and all the events this weekend. Slap those glasses on, grab a jacket, brace for the wind, and watch those cows sleep.

You might even get your picture in the paper.

See you out there.
