Fall sports connects communities

Saturday, August 19, 2023

Fall sports are just around the corner.

Once again communities will gather to cheer on their local teams.

It doesn’t matter your race, religion, or political party preferences, on game day we’re all best friends with anyone wearing the same colors.

Such is the power of sports.

Sports brings people together that normally wouldn’t come together.

Things in our area and country seem pretty bleak at times.

Divisiveness is rampant across our nation.

But come Friday night, many of those same people who are divided during the week come together as one to support their favorite team.

It’s sad to me that the only time a majority of us bond together is over a local sporting event.

Let’s try and bring that sense of togetherness throughout the week.

Let’s take some lessons our young athletes demonstrate on the playing field and use them in our daily lives.

Teamwork.

Players are taught that the performance of the team is stronger than the performance of one player alone.

Time-management.

Student athletes have to balance school, practice, games, friends, and family.

Self-discipline and wellness are also admirable attributes acquired through school sports.

Wonderful life lessons all.

So you see, school sports is much more than just a game.

Let’s hope we can grab hold of that special feeling of camaraderie and learn from the lessons displayed at the game.

Here’s to a great season for all our area sports teams.

See you out there.
