Summer’s Last Hurrah

Saturday, September 30, 2023

The Delta Fair.

Summer’s last hurrah.

Fall is here, but summer is giving us one last party.

Check out those temps this past week, and of course it’s final party, the fair.

I spent a few nights out there assisting at the Rotary booth and taking pics for the paper.

What a great time.

As a little boy I enjoyed the rides and the games.

As a young man, I enjoyed the games, the music, and of course, the food.

Now, as I celebrate 60 years on the planet today, I enjoy visiting with friends and family, watching the kids ride, and, yes, the food.

I hit that food court often.

Oh the joys of a Texas tater from the Tater Shack, topped off with a fried Twinkie and peanut brittle.

It always amazes me how we live here all year, and yet, still run into people at the fair we haven’t seen in a long time.

Something about the Delta Fair is magical.

Maybe it’s all the smiles and sounds of laughter through the midway.

Maybe it’s the many acts of kindness.

I saw everything from people helping corral runaway children, folks offering gnat spray to their neighbors, and turning in lost keys, as well as, believe it or not, money being turned in.

Amazing.

I hope you have an opportunity to experience this year’s Delta Fair.

I hope some of that magic rubs off on you, and you carry it through the rest of the fall and winter.

Hold onto it.

We’ll need some of that kindness as we face the issues of our community in the months ahead.

I think I’ll head out to the fair, sit on a bench looking out over the midway, and remember that little boy years ago, holding onto his parent’s hands and taking in all the sights and sounds of that magical place, the Delta Fair.

See you out there.
