Just As He Told You

The author of a commentary on the Gospel of Mark concluded that the early morning is God’s preferred time of deliverance in the Old Testament. The Israelites left Egypt in the early morning; the same time Jesus’ tomb was found empty. But other Christians will point out that discovery is not the same thing as the action or event. Jesus likely arose before morning, in the darkness before the dawn. Most evidence is usually made apparent in the light, as was the case with Mary Magdalene and Mary, the mother of James and Salome. They brought spices to anoint Jesus’ body, and as they approached to the tomb with evidence of perhaps poor planning on their part, they asked one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?” But the large stone had already been rolled away. From Mark 16:5-8, we can read, “And entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed in a white robe, and they were alarmed. And he said to them, ‘Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen; he is not here. See the place where they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going before you to Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.’ And they went out and fled from the tomb, for trembling and astonishment had seized them, and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.”
