Reunited with Christ

An Old Testament reading for Lent is from Genesis 22:1–18, which tells of Abraham’s obedience to God’s command, “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.” Abraham followed God’s instructions, as he “bound Isaac his son and laid him atop the wood”. This was also done to animals so they would not escape or struggle, kicking away the fire. A pastor shared this passage with a woman who was not a member of the parish which he served. The woman expressed outrage and distain at the very thought of what is going on in this passage. She said to the pastor, “I cannot believe in a god that would tell a dad to kill his son. I don’t care how this ends up. For that kind of god to ask that, I cannot in good conscience worship him.”
