Middle school begins a new world of responsibility for preteens. This time is really confusing and difficult because change marks this phase of life. Change isn’t easy for anyone. Middle schoolers want freedom. They want to make their own choices; they are tired of being told what to do and when to do it. Parents may receive a call from the teacher with a positive comment about the tween helping other students. The parent immediately thinks, “My kid?” These middle schoolers also want to fit in and what their peers think is more important than a parent’s insistence on tucking the shirt inside the jeans! Insecurities about appearance are an almost constant concern so often a caring adult sharing a personal experience can create communal feelings. Middle schoolers want to have fun but they want to be taken seriously.
