Moma had a tradition of inviting her friends to the house for a home cooked meal. Moma would clean the kitchen and the dining room and set out all the needed dishes and serving pieces. Friends from her working days at the telephone office and a few other friends plus Mrs. Palmer and Mrs. Holly were Moma’s guests. (Mrs. Palmer cleaned our house and broke all the switches on Mondays and Mrs. Holly was our babysitter; these special ladies were part of our chosen family.) A huge pot of white beans and ham would be prepared along with cornbread, mixed greens, purple hull peas, sliced tomatoes and onions, and chocolate and coconut pie with perfectly browned meringue. Her friends would gather early and drink tea while the food was brought to the table. They would eat and pass the vinegar in that cut glass cruet. These ladies could connect people through work, church, and family. Their laughter filled the house and their stories were more than interesting.
