Reaching and Repenting

Saturday, June 8, 2019

This year we Christians celebrated Easter on April 21 (the Eastern Orthodox Church celebrated a week later, as usual). Jesus walked on the earth for forty days after His resurrection then ascended into heaven (Ascension Day, always on a Thursday, this year May 30). Ten days after His ascension, the Holy Spirit came—promised by Jesus to His disciples. (John 14:15-31) We Christians recall the Day of Pentecost (this year June 9), when the disciples were empowered to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ and were given the ability to speak languages they had not known but were native to the many visitors who were in Jerusalem then for the celebration of the (Jewish) day of Pentecost, the fiftieth day after their Passover remembrance. Many were from faraway places who could not speak the languages common in Jerusalem. The visitors were amazed that those Jewish disciples could speak their languages, yet some of their fellow Jews thought the disciples were talking gibberish or were drunk. (Acts 2)
