Not long after our Lord ascended into heaven after walking the earth for forty days following His resurrection from the dead, disciple Peter was in Joppa waiting for his evening meal and decided to go to the roof of the house for some privacy in praying to the Lord. Recorded happening in Acts 10: 9-16 and told again in Acts 11:5-10, as Peter was recounting this vision for some Jews who were angry with him for eating and socializing with some Gentiles, or non-Jews. Peter had what he called “a trance” in which he saw, “a vision, something like a great sheet descending, being let down from heaven by its four corners, and it came down to me. Looking at it closely, I observed animals and beasts of prey and reptiles and birds of the air. And I heard a voice saying to me, ‘Rise, Peter; kill and eat.’ But I said, ‘By no means, Lord; for nothing common or unclean has ever entered my mouth.’ But the voice answered a second time from heaven, ‘What God has made clean, do not call common.’ This happened three times, and all was drawn up again into heaven.”
