The pitfalls of probate

When my dad passed in July, I wrote a piece on how to be prepared and relieve some of the burden on family members. Since then, a friend who lost a brother-in-law came to me and said, “You really need to stress the importance of making sure bank accounts and insurance policies have beneficiaries and co-signers.” Without co-signers, wills, and beneficiaries, estates are placed in probate courts that can cost big dollars and cause even bigger headaches, depending on the circumstances.
