They say it's hotter than it's ever been (7/10/12)At water coolers and coffee shops around the Midwest and south, you can hear people say things like, "They say it's hotter than it's ever been." With record breaking temperatures a common occurrence in recent weeks, that comment is factual. According to the National Climate Data Center, the 106 degree temperatures recorded in the month of June at the Malden Regional Airport substantially surpasses the previous record of 101 on the same date in 1969. In Sikeston, a 110 degree record was set this past month. The previous high had only reached 106 degrees for the month of June. Poplar Bluff temperature measuring stations also broke record highs that had been set in the 1950s. In the state of Missouri alone, 129 record highs were broken in June and 35 tied, many having stood for several decades. Nearby Arkansas experienced a similar fate with 120 broken records and 37 tied. The National Weather Service predicts however that a return to cooler weather has arrived for much of the central United States. A cold front slowly sinking south should bring a return to nearly normal temperatures. Highs for this week should not reach past the eighties and chances of thunderstorms continue throughout the week. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) warns that although summer is a time for cookouts, and time spent in the water or ball games, it is also a time when the hot weather can easily overcome anyone working or playing outside. Young children, people with chronic illnesses and the elderly are especially at-risk. During times of extreme heat and high humidity, evaporation is slowed and the body has to work extra hard to maintain a normal temperature. FEMA recommends that prior to extreme heat conditions, windows that receive morning or afternoon sun should be covered in order to reduce the heat that enters a home. They also recommend listening to local weather forecasts and staying aware of upcoming temperature changes. FEMA asks that you know who in your neighborhood is elderly, young, sick or overweight as they are more likely to become victims of excessive heat and may need assistance. During actual times of extreme heat, FEMA recommends that you never leave children or pets alone in closed vehicles, stay indoors as much as possible and limit exposure to the sun, eat well-balanced, regular meals and drink plenty of water, even when you do not feel thirsty. Avoid drinks with caffeine and limit the intake of alcoholic beverages. FEMA also asks that you consider spending the warmest part of the day in public buildings such as libraries, schools, and other community facilities. Circulating air can cool the body by increasing the perspiration rate of evaporation. The Malden Community Center has been designated a cooling center for locals who wish to heed this advice. Clothing, such as loose-fitting, lightweight, and light-colored clothes and wide-brimmed hats can contribute to comfort during times of extreme heat.
