The Rev. Dr. David Peters, professor at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, once shared with his hearers of an experience during a trip he made to the Holy Land in the late ‘90s. He was in what is known as the Judean Wilderness near the Dead Sea. They noticed some goats and sheep being shepherded by Bedouin shepherds. They are a nomadic people, owning no land, but wander from place to place throughout that region. The tour guide was a Palestinian who said that he had grown up in that culture but had left it to go to the city to live the modern life. So many other of the Bedouin young also had left that he predicted “the Bedouin might no longer exist by the year 2005”. Dr. Peters shared what else the guide added, sounding prophetic: “I guess shepherds will be irrelevant in the 21st century.”
