Service before self

I’ve been a member of the Kennett Rotary Club for a couple of years now.

Last night they were good enough to allow me to serve as president of the club for the coming year.

I appreciate the opportunity.

A couple of things attracted me to Rotary.

Number one was the laughter.

We laugh, a lot.

We are not a glum bunch to be sure.

The second was the sense of community and a passion to help others.

It will be a challenge to come up with innovative fundraisers and events to help the community during a pandemic, but we will find a way.

That’s what Rotary does.

Service before self.

I also like the philosophy of the 4 way test.

Is it the truth?

Is it fair to all concerned?

Will it build goodwill and better friendships?

Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

Rotary member or not, if you adhere to this philosophy, you’re going to have some positive experiences.

It really breaks down to good fellowship and serving our community.

It’s about community.

That’s important to me.

Whether I’m over in Malden visiting David Black at the Malden Museum, or covering an election at the courthouse in Kennett, or visiting with Arbyrd Mayor Jeff Wilson and his city council, there’s a feeling of community.

With all the divisiveness in the nation at this time, it’s nice to live an area where the spirit of community still exists.

See you out there.
