As the time of Lent draws to its glorious end, the appointed Scripture readings (the Lectionary) include the theme of death, but pointing to Jesus as He travels closer and closer to Jerusalem to fulfill His purpose as God becoming flesh to die for the sins of the world. Ezekiel’s prophetic vision of the valley of the dry (37:1-14) bones points to the Christ as the only One who can bring life to the dead. Jesus’ resurrection of Lazarus (John 11:1-44) foreshadows Jesus’ own resurrection and the power He will have to raise all who have ever lived—some to life everlasting and others to eternal death amidst torment. In truth and honesty, we don’t really know much about death or what happens immediately after we die. Pastors will report of parishioners’ anger if they’re not told that their recently departed loved ones are not in heaven—”right now!”
