Oprah for President

Saturday, January 20, 2018

Relax America. Oprah is coming to save the day.

After Winfrey’s speech at the Golden Globes, speculation has run rampant that she’ll soon be hitting the campaign trail.

Many described it as moving, inspiring, and yes I even heard presidential.

She made a speech at an awards show folks.

Apparently, these days that’s all it takes to qualify you to run the country.

Celebrities certainly haven’t been reluctant in sharing there political viewpoints lately, but we certainly don’t have to take every entertainer/sports figure’s opinion as gospel.

I read this week that allowing a celebrity to instruct us on political matters is like taking medical advice from an actor who plays a doctor.

Winfrey publicly thanked those that encouraged her to take a run at the White House, but stated she is not planning a political career.

Yeah, right. Ok, Oprah.

Winfrey isn’t the first celebrity to run for office to be sure.

And some have been quite successful.

Arnold Schwarzenegger, Clint Eastwood, Sonny Bono, and former wrestler Jesse ‘The Body” Ventura who became the Governor of Minnesota to name a few.

What a country.

Jerry Springer was Mayor of Cincinnati and let’s not forget the actor who shared screen time with a monkey and went on to become the 40th President of the United States, Ronald Reagan.

Celebrities have always been part of the political arena, courted by candidates for endorsements, inaugural ball planning, and money.

Lots and lots of money.

However more and more of our entertainers are ready to trade in their tinseltown careers for a platform and the opportunity to serve.

Big leap for most of them.

So will 2020 be the year of more celebrity candidates?

Maybe.

Some names being bandied about include Winfrey, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, former first lady Michelle Obama, businessman and TV personality Mark Cuban, and God help us, wrestler-turned-actor Duane “The Rock” Johnson.

How’s that for a star-studded lineup?

This last presidential election proved that anything can happen and it’s most likely that none of these good people will indeed run.

But wouldn’t it be something seeing Oprah leading the parade, waving Old Glory, handing out cars and making other candidates cry while getting in touch with their feelings?

One thing’s for sure.

It will not be boring.

See you out there.
