Fairs and Football

Saturday, September 30, 2017

I have always loved fairs and especially the Delta Fair.

Each year my wife and I would take vacation time and travel to Kennett for the fair.

Where else can you see old friends and relatives in one place and be entertained all at the same time?

As a kid I couldn’t wait to try the rides and as an adult I can’t wait to see grandkids enjoy them.

The atmosphere at a fair is electric, filled with anticipation and excitement.

I enjoy it all from the booths in the American Legion Building to the packed stands on derby night.

Let’s not forget the food.

Nothing better than fair food and the food court is my favorite place on the fairgrounds.

I hit them all. Everything from bacon wrapped hot dogs, BBQ nachos, and a good fish plate from the Jaycees. Bring it on.

Of course you need to finish off with fried pies and funnel cakes, then wash it down with a large lemonade bought from a lady inside a giant lemon.

It just doesn’t get any better.

Putting this all together isn’t easy and fair board members, volunteers and vendors should be applauded for the work they put in throughout the year to give us this wonderful event.

It certainly shows a sense of cooperation and unity.

I had a food vendor tell me this week that is amazing what a community this size can do when they work together.

Maybe that’s what our country needs.

A good old fashioned fair for the entire nation.

In a country where our professional athletes now refuse to stand for the national anthem I don’t believe we could pull it off.

I don’t want to spend much time on the NFL. They get enough press over this as it is.

I just can’t figure out how kneeling for the anthem helps their cause or how looting is a form of protest.

I’ve had a list of entertainers, actors and products that I’ve boycotted for quite awhile now and it saddens me that I may have watched my last NFL game, as I have to add football to the list.

As for advertisers who support this shameful practice of kneeling during the anthem, if we would focus on one product that continues to advertise the NFL as a whole and refuse to buy that product, you’d see some folks standing up again.

These protests aren’t going away soon and the issues that spark them run deep and are extremely divisive.

Henry Ford once said, “Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success.”

I realize a fair can’t save us from the mess we’re in, but where would we be without our dreams?

See you out there.
