Fraud prevention award given to local abstract company

Scams have become as varied and frequent as the weather changes in the Bootheel. While scammers can come off as legitimate, usually, however, something seems "off." Such was the case a few months ago when Terry Berry at Dunklin County Abstract began to deal with someone who sent her a contract for a house purchase. "The contract was between him and someone I was well acquainted with," she said. "The contract was signed and it looked legit. The party sent another email that said we were ready to disperse and would I disperse the money, if he sent it. He did send it, but the buyer hadn't contacted me. I contacted him, and he said he hadn't signed a contract at all. I started checking and it was scam."
