Honey bees are a vital part of the world's food supply, and over the years, the United States has seen a major decline in their pollinator numbers. For farmers, it is estimated that bees may increase the annual value of U.S. crop production by $15 billion. Most importantly, bees are necessary because they pollinate plants that produce cucumbers, pumpkins, fruit, berries, watermelons, tomatoes, soybean and corn, all of which are grown in the Missouri Bootheel.
