Annual Great Central U.S. ShakeOut earthquake drill just around the corner

Monday, October 13, 2014

The Kennett Public School District will be participating in the 2014 Great Central U.S. ShakeOut earthquake preparedness drill, which is set for Oct. 16, in Missouri and nine other midwest and midsouth states. More than 2.5 million people will take part in the drill, including approximately 400,000 participants in Missouri. The event is part of a larger ShakeOut earthquake drill involving more than 17 million people across the entire country and overseas. The "Drop, Cover and Hold" drill will begin at precisely 10:16 a.m., when participants will stop whatever they are doing, at whatever location, and participate in the safety technique. The annual ShakeOut drills help earthquake-prone areas prepare for what to do in the event of a high-intensity incident. Other states participating in the central U.S. Event include Arkansas, Kentucky, Tennessee, Illinois, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Alabama, and Ohio. It is being coordinated by the Missouri State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), the Central U.S. Earthquake Consortium, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and the U.S. Geological Survey, among others.
