Semifinals set at Bootheel Conference varsity and junior varsity girls basketball tournaments

KENNETT, Mo. - The championship semifinals are set at the Bootheel Conference junior varsity and varsity girls basketball tournaments following quarterfinal action Saturday at Kennett High School.

Top-seeded Kennett will take on No. 4 seeded South Pemiscot in the first varsity semifinal Monday at 6:30 p.m. No. 2 seeded Senath-Hornersville will take on No. 3 seeded Portageville in the second varsity semifinal Monday at 8 p.m.

Senath-Hornersville defeated No. 7 seeded Malden 68-13 in the first varsity quarterfinal Saturday. Portageville defeated No. 6 seeded Campbell 59-27 in the second varsity quarterfinal; South Pemiscot beat No. 5 seeded Hayti 65-57 in the third varsity quarterfinal; and Kennett manhandled No. 8 seeded Caruthersville 73-6 in the final varsity quarterfinal.

Top-seeded Hayti will meet No. 5 seeded Malden in the first junior varsity semifinal Monday at 4 p.m. No. 2 seeded Kennett will take on No. 6 seeded Campbell in the second junior varsity semifinal Monday at 5:15 p.m.

Malden beat No. 4 seeded Senath-Hornersville 29-16 in the first junior varsity quarterfinal Saturday. Campbell upset No. 3 seeded Portageville 25-15 in the second junior varsity quarterfinal Saturday. Hayti and Kennett received first-round byes in the 6-team junior varsity bracket.

Kennett coach Rod Baxter said the Coaches vs. Cancer theme will be promoted throughout the Bootheel Conference girls tournament at Kennett this week.

"We've offered for all the coaches to coach in tennis shoes," Baxter said. "Our team is also wearing pink shoelaces.

"I've lost three family members to cancer," Baxter continued. "I'm very much attuned to the responsibility of all of us to defeat this disease so we are going to continue that theme throughout the tournament."
