Samuel Edward "Jack" Mullen, 96, of Gideon died Thursday, January 10, 2013, at his residence in Gideon. He was a former member of the Gideon School Board for 13 years, a former Progressive Farmer of the Year and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Gideon.

Born April 15, 1916, in Avalon, Miss., he was the son of the late Henry Buford Mullen and Lettie (Embry) Mullen. On August 19, 1952, in Piggott, Ark., he was united in marriage to Sylvia Lee Singleton, who survives.

Also surviving are one son, Sam Mullen and wife, Carol Jean, of St. Charles, Mo.; two daughters, Charlotte Mullen of Williamsville, Mo. and Janis Mullen of the home in Gideon; one brother, James H. "Jimmy" Mullen of Waynesboro, Va.; one sister, Mary Betty Hyland and husband, Glen, of Beebe, Ark., grandchildren, Sherry Felker and husband, Kevin, of O'Fallen, Mo., Scott Mullen and wife, Dawn, of O'Fallen, David Dixon of Springfield, Mo., and Dr. Matthew Dixon of Bluffton, S.C., and great-grandchildren, Tyler Felker, Kennedy Felker and Claire Mullen.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Hazel B. Clippard and one brother, Raymond Douglas "Doug" Mullen.

Visitation was held Friday, January 11, at Bradshaw Funeral Home in Gideon. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, January 12, at the First Baptist Church in Gideon with Rev. Lloyd Anderson and Rev. Earnest Puckett officiating. Burial was in Stanfield Cemetery at Clarkton. Bradshaw Funeral Home of Gideon was in charge of arrangements.
