KPD to provide gun locks, safety info

Wednesday, January 9, 2013

In an attempt to prevent accidental shootings at home, The Kennett Police Department (KPD) will be handing out free gun locks and information regarding firearm safety at Walmart Supercenter in Kennett on January 26, 2013.

An officer will be on hand to answer any questions that local residents may have regarding firearms and firearm safety. The event will be held from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m.

According to a written release from the KPD, "Investing a few moments of time now, to ensure that ones guns are safely secured can prevent the needless loss of life and the possibility of criminal penalties. Safely storing and securing guns from children will help prevent accidents and save lives."

The Kennett Police Department has released a few of the safety tips that anyone with the possession of a firearm should adhere to. They include:

Share information; teach the children about the dangers of guns. They are not toys; they can kill or injure. What they see on TV and in the movies is different than real life.

Hiding a gun is a good idea, but not good enough. A child's curiosity and desire to explore are strong. Secure an unloaded a gun in a childproof container, such as a safe or locked box. Place the container in a high, unreachable location.

Store ammunition separately in a safety storage device.

Trigger locks and locking cables are two examples of additional security devices. Partial disassembly is also an option.

According to the department, "a bullet from an unsecured gun can destroy the life of a child and change yours forever. A few precious moments of prevention may save a life time of sorrow."

Authorities said the gun locks are limited in supply at this time, and will only be available while supplies last.
