Irvin Matlock had been reported missing 6 a.m., Monday morning at the New Madrid County Sheriff's Department. Matlock and his partner were going to camp out at the Blue Hole on the levee near Point Pleasant Sunday night. When a thunderstorm came upon them, they started to walk back to their home. After a brief argument with the partner, the two separated.
The partner, whose name has yet to be released, was picked up and taken to her home Sunday evening and Matlock never returned. Early Monday morning, family members reported to authorities what had happened and is still missing. He is legally blind.
Monday afternoon, Sheriff Terry Stevens had call in extra help from the Sikeston Department of Public Safety. Sikeston DPS arrived with their mobile Incident Command Center and two warming tents.
According to Stevens, at 4:30 p.m., Matlock had not been found and additional search parties were being sent out. The search began next to a field where partner was picked up. Matlock's body was found Monday evening and was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:15 p.m. He was in a drainage ditch that had water and drowned. The body was taken by coroner to conduct some lab reports, and the body was later released to Delisle Funeral Home in Portageville. As of press time, the case is considered a homicide until a complete investigation has been concluded.
Involved in the search and rescue efforts were members of the New Madrid County Sheriff's Department, Portageville Police Department, Missouri Highway Patrol and Sikeston Department of Public Safety.
