The Bernie Mules junior varsity boys basketball team receives its first-place plaque following its 28-point win against Gideon in the championship of the Bernie Invitational basketball tournament Saturday afternoon.
BERNIE, Mo. - The top-seeded Bernie Mules defeated the sixth-seeded Gideon Bulldogs 54-26 in the championship of the 8-team Bernie Invitational junior varsity basketball tournament Saturday afternoon.
The Mules outscored the Bulldogs in every quarter and tallied 18 unanswered points in the second half.
Bernie's Caleb Ellenburg led all scorers with 26 points.
Brandon Sparks calculated five 3-pointers for the Mules. Sparks finished the game with 22 points.
Brian Buchanan led Gideon in scoring with eight points.
Bernie advanced to Saturday's final with a quarterfinal win against No. 8 seeded Naylor and semifinal win against fifth-seeded Holcomb. Gideon got to the final by collecting a quarterfinal win against third-seeded Senath-Hornersville and semifinal victory against No. 2 seeded Hayti.
Hayti defeated Holcomb 46-44 in the third-place game Saturday.
