Sonya Edington, former volleyball coach at Campbell, takes over this year from long-time girls' basketball coach Daren Ellsworth. Ellsworth moved to assistant principal of the school.

Coming over from volleyball, what do you think about the change?

"It's definitely a lot different because basketball's a lot more intense," answered Edington. "I'm very excited. Most of the girls know me from volleyball so I think we'll have a pretty good season. They've adjusted well with me."

How long have you been practicing so far this year and what do you think about your girls?

Edington said, "This is our second week. The girls are a young team. I have four true varsity players, but they all have a lot of skill and talent in the sport and they work hard and I think they'll have a really good season compared to what they've had in the past."

You're following behind a long-time, well-loved coach (Daren Ellsworth). Have you changed anything that he's done? Are you pretty much going with the way his program was set up?

"Coach Ellsworth was my coach in junior high and high school, so some of the drills are the same," Edington explained. "The plays and the way we run the game are going to be a little bit different. We're going to try to play a little more fast-paced defense and offense than what they're used to."

What kind of expectations do you have for your girls?

"I expect them to have a really good season," Edington said. "The sophomores will definitely step up and help the varsity. There isn't a single sophomore that doesn't have a varsity skill level, along with a lot of the freshmen will be able to help. So I think they'll have a great season, both teams."

What can the fans expect this year? Anybody in particular we should be looking at, or anything extra special?

Edington answered, "The two seniors, Hannah Davis and Taylor Cochran, are definitely going to help. Hannah will bring the ball down and Taylor will be trained to play in every position. The also, sophomore Johanna Nelson is going to step up as a full-time varsity player. She's young, but she's one to watch."

Is there anything you'd like to add that we haven't covered?

"I just hope that everything goes well and that I do as good of a job as Coach Ellsworth did," Edington said.

The Campbell Lady Camels will travel to Senath to take on the Lady Lions on Monday, November 19.
