Now in his fourth year as head coach of the Portageville Lady Bulldogs basketball team, coach Barry Branscum is looking forward to the upcoming season. The Portageville Lady Bulldogs will start their basketball season running as they participate in the South Pemiscot Bulldog Invitational at Steele. Branscum says he has much expectation for this season. Last year, the Lady Dogs were 12-13, and he hopes to improve that. Collectively, he has led the team with a 24-43 record over the last four years. The assistant coach is Susan Penn.

They have four returning starters this year. "Our seniors really have a lot of good qualities. We have a much larger group of girls in the two teams combined," said Coach Branscum. There are 18 girls. He treats the junior varsity and varsity team as one big team, and really did not want to pick out or single out a handful of players to be watching for.

"We are expecting a very competitive season," added Branscum. "We have more athletes playing this year than we have had the past few years. We are expecting big things for ourselves this season."

Their season began on Monday, Nov. 26 against Malden in the Bulldog Invitational at Steele.

The Lady Bulldogs will be traveling their next two games with Twin Rivers, Dec. 5 and Kennett, Dec. 8, before their first home game on Monday, Dec. 12 against Malden.

The returning starters are going to be the leaders and scorers on the court this year, and really set the tone for everybody else.
