Malden High School girls' basketball coach, Shellena Stone, does double duty as the junior high girls' coach. She took time out of a recent junior high practice for an interview.

How many practices have you had so far? What do you think about your girls so far?

Stone answered: "We've had, I think, about 13 or 14 practices. As far as the outlook for this season, we're still dealing with a lot of injuries but we have huge numbers. We have two girls that have never played before and I've got a strong freshman team that's coming in. That's going to kind of push these upper classmen to "get in gear". They seem excited about the season and, while we're going to be trying to come back from the season we had last year that wasn't our best, we'll do much better this year, than we did last year.

"We've still got a lot of work to do but I'm hoping that we'll actually turn it up this year and really give some teams a run for their money."

How many seniors do you have this year?

"I have three seniors in Jada Miller, Andrea Hughes, and Lazhaina Holmes."

Is there anything you are changing from last year?

Stone responded: "Well, I'm trying to do a little more man (-to-man) but zone defense is such a great defense that, I mean, it's really aggressive against teams, but were going to try man for those times when our zone just isn't working. We're going to see how that looks and, hopefully, then put in more offense so that we can actually get the ball moving a little bit more often this year than we did last year."

Any predictions for the upcoming season?

Stone said: "As far as this year I would hope that we have at least a .500 season and I don't think we should be under .500 but it's just going to depend on the dedication of these and whether or not they want to put forth the effort to go in and do what they're supposed to do."

The MHS Green Wave girls will host the East Carter Redbirds on Monday, Nov. 19 in their season opener.
