Entries still being accepted for Christmas Parade

Thursday, November 15, 2012

December is fast approaching and all the activities that go with the holidays. If anyone is giving any thought to participating in the Kennett Christmas Parade, the Chamber of Commerce is still accepting entries.

According to Meg Benson, executive director with the Chamber of Commerce, and Sara Graves, executive director of the Kennett Revitalization Program, the parade will be held at 5:30 p.m., on Friday, Dec. 14, 2012.

This year will mark the second year for the parade and officials are encouraging a variety of participation.

"We would love to see floats and other unique entries with a Christmas theme. Because this parade will be after dark, we would love to see lots of lights on floats, golf carts, trucks, people, etc.! Think Christmas lights!" said Benson. Churches, different organizations, campuses or businesses are all encouraged to register.

Prize money will be awarded to the top floats as follows: First Place, $250, Second Place, $150, and Third Place, $100.

Again, entrants to the parade are being asked to "think outside the box" regarding entries.

The route that the parade will take will begin at the east end of town on First Street and will proceed through the downtown square. Once the parade is over, there will be caroling on the courthouse steps as well as the jolly man himself, "Santa Claus" who will be available pictures.

According to remarks made by Graves last year, the route that the parade takes is unique since it travels backwards and ends in downtown. The reasoning for this is so Santa can visit with the children once the parade is over.

Last year the 2011 Christmas Parade attracted thousands of spectators from Southeast Missouri but also Northeast Arkansas. And if they weren't watching it live and in person, they were tuning in to the live broadcast on YHCTV, Channel 21. Entries last year included a mule team, festive holiday floats, Santa on a Harley, local officials, marching bands, and the school choir.

If your business, school, or organization would like to be featured in the parade, contact the Kennett Chamber of Commerce at (573)888-5828 or by e-mail atinfo@kennettmo.com. Deadline to register is 4 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 13, 2012.

The Kennett Christmas Parade is a project of the Downtown Kennett Revitalization Program, the City of Kennett, and the Kennett Chamber of Commerce.
