CARDWELL, Mo. -- The Southland School Board of Education and administrator's met last night, Thursday, November 9, 2012 at approximately 8 p.m. As the meeting began, the Superintendent, Kim Campbell called the meeting to an executive session to speak of private school matters.
When the executive session ended, the regular meeting proceeded with approving the agenda, the minutes of the previous meeting and the monthly bills. The principal's of the district then gave their reports.
The Elementary Principal told the board of the 94.1 percent attendance with a 215 enrollment, up from last years enrollment. Approximately 33 students and five teacher are reported to have perfect attendance for the year, thus far.
On October 18, 2012, the parent teacher conference was held and was reported to be "well attended." In the National Day of Writing, that Mrs. Blevins and students participated in on October 19, 2012, the winners were as follows:
In the upper elementary, the winners were; Jimmie Davis taking first place, Maggie Henson taking second place, and Austin Bennett taking third place.
In the intermediate fifth and sixth grade poetry, the winners included; Destiny Reed taking first place, Jacob Springer taking second place, and Tatumn Kibbe taking third place.
In the intermediate fifth and sixth grad fiction, winners were; Eva McCracken taking first place and Sky Sessums taking second place.
The principal also spoke of a field trip that took place on October 25, 2012, where 28 of the lower elementary honor roll student attended. On October 29, 2012, the 39 upper elementary honor roll students took their field trip. On October 31, 2012, the elementary students attended an assembly presented by Mrs. Cooper and the RED HOT members wrapping up Red Ribbon Week.
Up coming events that are expected to take place at the elementary school include:
* On November 12 and 13, 2012, Fall break will take place.
* On November 20, 2012, the Dental bus will be on campus.
* On November 27, 2012, Mrs. Murray will hold the next Family Reading Night.
* On November 30, 2012, the third and fourth grade students will be going to Paragould, Ark.
* On December 6, 2012, the elementary Christmas Concert will take place.
In the High School Principals report, he spoke of the 140 enrolled students, 49 of them have perfect attendance, with four teachers continuing with perfect attendance. He also spoke of the 42 students that were treated to Larry's Pizza, yesterday, November 8, for making the first quarter honor roll. The seventh grade students won pizza for lunch on October 23, for the best attendance for the first quarter.
The principal then spoke of the volleyball season coming to a close with a record of 16-8, up from last year's record, 7-17. The Federal Budget has been approved for approximately $200,000. The Fall Festival, held Friday, November 2, 2012, raised over $6,500.
In the Fall Speaking Contests for the FFA, the principal reported that Chase McClelland placed first, and also qualified for state, along with Madison Kellums. The Junior High poetry contest winners were; Jade Reed and Kaci Eastburn, with the High School winners being Anna Henson, and Katie Hufford.
The Junior High basketball season was reported to be wrapping up with the conference tournament, which will begin on Monday, November 8, 2012. The High School season will begin on Monday, November 19, 2012 against Armorel.
The FFA sponsored blood drive will take place on December 6, 2012 from 1 p.m., to 6 p.m., in the library, according to the principal. The ACT will be given at Southland on December 8, 2012.
In the Superintendent's Report, Kim Campbell reported that the Filling dates for the board election will be held, beginning December 11, 2012 at 8 a.m., and closing on January 15, 2013 at 5 p.m. Campbell also spoke of the reserves being up 8.8 percent from this time last year. The Superintendent then mentioned a staff dinner taking place on November 20, 2012, the school being in session half of a day today, Friday, November 9, and Fall break being Monday, November 12 and Tuesday, November 13, 2012.
The board then adjourned the regular session and proceeded with a second executive session. Reports from the executive session were unavailable at press time.
