Area woman killed in Tuesday morning crash

RIVES, Mo. ---- One woman was killed Tuesday morning following a single vehicle crash in southern Dunklin County.

According to Trooper T.P. Watson with the Missouri State Highway Patrol, at approximately 9:20 a.m., Johnie E. Whitaker, 86, of Steele was driving south on County Road 723, four miles south of Rives, when the 1998 Dodge Caravan Whitaker was traveling in, ran off the side of the roadway and struck a ditch. She was pronounced dead at the scene by Dunklin County Coroner, James Powell.

Whitaker's body was taken to the McDonald Funeral Home in Blytheville, Ark., by the coroner. The family of Johnie Whitaker have been notified.

The 1998 Dodge Caravan was extensively damaged and was towed from the scene.

Trooper Watson was assisted by Trooper B.W. Emerson, Cpl. M.L. Scoggins, the Dunklin County Sheriff's Office, the Hornersville, Mo., Police Department, and the Senath, Mo., Fire Department.
