Joe Vester Shipman, son of the late C.C. "Shorty" Shipman and Josephine Dorcus Robinson Shipman, was born on Feb. 25, 1929, in Holcomb, Mo., and departed this life on Friday, Oct. 26, 2012, at Twin Rivers Medical Center in Kennett at the age of 83 years, eight months, and one day. Joe married Loraine Gattis on Nov. 20, 1961.
Survivors include his wife, Loraine Shipman, of Kennett; three sons, Martin Lewis and wife, Barbara, of Campbell, Mo., Joe L. Shipman and wife, Wanda, of Holcomb, and Gilbert Lewis and wife, Dianne, of Osceola, Ark.; five daughters, Gwen DeBerry and husband, Hughie, of White Oak, Mo., Joyce Wilson and husband, Mike, of Parsons, Tenn., Patricia Johnson, of Kennett, Penny Nelson and husband, Larry, of Kennett, and Kimberly Hargrove and husband, David, of Kennett; one sister, Betty Moore of Holcomb; 30 grandchildren, a host of great-grandchildren and a host of great-great grandchildren as well as other relatives and many friends.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Willis Lewis and Dana Shipman, a daughter, Carmelita Mills, one brother, Donald E. Shipman, and a grandson.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Monday, Oct. 29, 2012, at First United Pentecostal Church in Kennett with Rev. Don Sheerin and Bishop Carroll McGruder officiating.
Burial was in Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Kennett.
Serving as pallbearers were Shannon Wilson, Shane Nelson, Brian Chancey, Shawn Haynes, Michael Nelson and David Hargrove.
