The Senath-Hornersville Elementary school has kicked off the Backpacks for Friday Program. It began Friday, September 14, 2012.
According to Amanda Ezell, the community was informed about the program and asked for donations in June of this year, 2012.
"The Senath and Hornersville communities donated over $6,000 to help provide 25 backpacks for the 2012-2013 school year," Ezell said.
The Backpack on Friday Program works with the Southeast Missouri Food Bank, who delivers four weeks of food each month to the Senath-Hornersville Elementary School. High school students helping to unload the food each month.
"Each week Dorothy Adam's Women's Sunday School class from the Senath First Baptist Church, clean and pack the backpacks," Ezell said.
The school provides 25 backpacks per week to 25 students and their families.
The backpacks serve approximately 75 children, which counts other children living in each household.
According to Ezell, the Senath-Hornersville Elementary School has over 70 percent of students who receive free or reduced lunches.
"We feel this program gives us the opportunity to attend to our students' well-being and support their academic success," Ezell said. "We want our students to know we care about them and their needs.
"The program was blessed with generous funding from the Senath-Hornersville community."
