Some glad morning when this life is over, I'll fly away." James "Jim" L. McCallister, 70, of Montgomery, Texas, did just that on Thursday, Sept. 6, 2012, at Conroe Regional Medical Center in Conroe, Texas.
Jim was born and raised in Holcomb, Mo., and graduated from Holcomb High School in 1960. He joined the U.S. Navy and served on the USS Ingersoll (DD 652) during the Vietnam War. Following his discharge from the U.S. Navy, Jim resided in Southern California and worked for the Sysco Corp. for 29 years. Upon retirement, Jim and his wife, Jane, moved to Wappapello, Mo., and subsequently relocated to Montgomery, Texas.
Survivors include his wife, Jane, of Montgomery; two sons, Vergal McCallister, of Arizona and Ken McCallister, of Colorado; a step-daughter, Lisa, of Texas and a step son, Bill, of California. Other survivors include five brothers, Bob, of Park Hills, Mo., Allen, John, and Steve, all of Holcomb and Dennis, of Kennett; two sisters, Marilyn Altman, of Dallas, Ga., and Patricia Swift, of Kennett. He is also survived by six grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and other family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James "Bud" McCallister and Florine Smith McCallister, of Holcomb and a brother, Bill, of Portageville, Mo.
Cremation with military services and interment at 11:00 a.m., Monday, Oct. 22, 2012 at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield, Mo.
