October is breast cancer awareness month and in order to help bring attention to the disease, a pink news rack will be placed in front of the Delta News Citizen on Main Street in Malden. Proceeds of newspaper purchases from the pink rack will go toward ICARE, a program which provides direct assistance to individual cancer patients with financial needs, filling "a gap left open by other cancer support organizations."

Volunteers with ICARE are people who have been touched personally by cancer, either as a victim, or as a family member, or a friend of someone who has fought the battle against cancer. Dunklin County citizens are at the heart of the organization's initiative.

The organization offers assistance with transportation expenses, nutritional supplements, medical supplies, prescription expenses, and financial aid to support activities of daily living. According to ICARE, qualifying patients must first complete an application and a monthly limit is assigned, and in special cases when the needs exceed the patient's limit, ICARE Board of Directors will review the case.
