HOLCOMB, Mo. - The Holcomb varsity volleyball team overcame a 24-20 third-set deficit to beat Caruthersville 23-25, 25-15, 26-24, Thursday.

Holcomb also won the junior varsity contest against Caruthersville in three sets.

"We had some underclassmen step up tonight," Holcomb coach Zach McDaniel said. "I had to move four junior varsity players up tonight because a starting varsity player was sick today. We were on the ropes several times in both games, but found ways to succeed.

"Great team wins for both squads," McDaniel continued. "Hopefully we can carry this momentum into [Friday's] Gideon tournament."

Holcomb begins play in the 16-team Gideon volleyball tournament Friday. Holcomb will play Clarkton at 5 p.m. Friday, Risco at 7 p.m. Friday and South Pemiscot at 9 p.m. Friday. If Holcomb finishes in the top two teams in its four-team pool it will qualify for Saturday's bracket-play portion of the tournament.
