KENNETT, Mo. - The Kennett varsity girls tennis team moved within one victory of the double-digit win plateau Thursday afternoon with a convincing 9-0 win against district rival Sikeston.

"We were pretty solid today," Kennett coach Janet Hilburn said. "We got out there and took care of business. It's always good to pick up a victory against Sikeston."

Kennett, which lost its season opener to Jackson, has won its last nine games to improve to 9-1 on the season.

"It really feels amazing," Kennett's Kelsey Washburn said of the winning streak. "I love playing doubles with Kate. We keep each other happy and focussed. We make sure we have fun with it. Winning makes it even more fun."

Kennett won all of its varsity singles and doubles matches by at least six points Thursday against Sikeston.

"My shots were really good today and my serves were good," Kennett senior Kate White said.

"Me and Kelsey love doubles," White added. "It's our favorite when compared to singles. We are glad to have had the success we have had so far."

Kennett also won the junior varsity contest against Sikeston 8-2 on Thursday.

Kennett, which has won its district tournament each of the last five seasons, is once again a favorite to receive the No. 1 seed in its district tournament in 2012. Kennett will compete in Class 1, District 1, with Caruthersville, Charleston, Dexter, Notre Dame Regional High School and Sikeston the first week of October.

Kennett has a 7-0 record against teams in its district tournament this season and has beat every team in its district tournament at least once.

"We've got one more week," coach Hilburn said. "We've got a big match against Dexter on Monday. Right now we are standing pretty good as far as the seeding for the district. We hope we do get the No. 1 seed. We will know more about our seed at the end of next week".

Kennett will travel to take on Dexter Monday. Kennett defeated Dexter 6-3 on Sept. 4. Kennett also squared off against Dexter in the 2011 district championship.

"I don't think their No. 1 was there the first time we played them," Washburn said of Dexter. "I'm kind of nervous to see how it turns out this time, but excited to see if we can get the 'W.'"
