R.J. "Ronnie" Dirks, 89, of Bernie, Mo., formerly of Malden, Mo., passed away Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2011, at his residence.
Born Jan. 18, 1922, in Akron, Ohio, son of the late Henry Dirks and Ethel Bruns Dirks, he was a U.S. Army Air Corps WWII veteran, having received the Silver Star and the Distinguished Flying Cross. He was president of the Malden Grain Company, a former mayor of Malden, and he received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Iowa State.
On June 10, 1944, in Malden, he married Margaret Mewhirter Dirks, who preceded him in death in October of 1991. He later married Mergie Gulledge.
Survivors include his wife, Mergie Dirks, of Malden, her children and grandchildren; three sons, Douglas J. Dirks and wife, Sally, of Malden, David H. Dirks and wife, Teresa, of Warrenburg, Mo., and William R. Dirks and wife, Barbara, of West Des Moines, Iowa; three grandchildren, Carl Dirks and wife, Tiffonie, of Prairie Village, Kan., Jared Dirks and wife, Amy, of Warrenburg, and Jessie Dirks and wife, Reema, of Sacramento, Calif., seven great-grandchildren, Chase, Lillie, Jake, Harper, Julian, Finley and Jonah, and six nieces and nephews, George Mewhirter, Sabra Elmer, David Mewhirter, Malley Gaulding, Deborah Rylander and Rick Dirks.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Rev. Margaret Dirks and one brother, Leonard Dirks.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Monday, Oct. 10, at Landess Funeral Home in Malden.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 11, at the First Presbyterian Church in Malden with Revs. Paul Currie and Paul Williams officiating.
Burial will follow in the Ash Hill Cemetery at Fisk, Mo.
