He was born May 16, 1921, in Clinton, Ark., to the late Obie and Lillian Godfrey Cossey. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was then a self-employed farmer before retiring.
He is survived by two sons, Chester O'Neal Cossey, of Bloomfield, Mo., and Gary Cossey, of Dexter, Mo.; seven daughters, Carol McLard, Kathy Seals, Connie Hensley and Judy Killian, all of Sikeston, Barbara Renfro, of Bloomfield, Sharon Aters, of East Prairie, Mo., and Nona Odum, of Kennett; two brothers, Dee Cossey, of the state of Washington and Roy Cossey, of Gideon, Mo.; 25 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by the mother of his children, Katherine Kellick Cossey. He later married Verdie Qualls, who also preceded him. He was also preceded in death by one son, Harlan Ray Cossey; one grandson, Bradley Clenney, and three brothers, Garner Cossey, Lloyd Cossey and Clifford Cossey.
Friends may call from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., today, Thursday, July 28, at Ponder Funeral Home in Sikeston, where funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, July 29 with Revs. Tony Rhynes and Jimmy Kirby officiating.
Burial will follow in the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery at Bloomfield with full military honors.
