Born Sept. 27, 1925, in Rector, son of the late Luther and Virgie Myrick Gardner, he served in the Army during World War II and then worked as a farmer. He was a member of the Evangelical Methodist Church at Hargrave Corner for many years.
In addition to his parents, Junior was preceded in death by his two brothers, Lavern Gardner and Ray Gardner and a sister, Gloyce Dills.
Surviving Junior is his wife, Mary Sula Poppe Gardner; two daughters and their husbands, Diane and Jim McClain, of Kennett and Sherry and Cam Cate, of Rector; three grandchildren, Jeff Deniston, Amanda Layer and Madison Cate; one great-great-grandchild, Nick Deniston; three step-grandchildren, Jimmy McClain, of Kennett, Melissa Eliot, of Santa Monica, Calif., and Josh Cate, of Fredericksburg, Va., and four step-great-grandchildren, Parker McClain, Molly McClain and Silas McClain, all of Kennett and Ike Eliot, of Santa Monica.
Visitation will begin at 6 p.m., Wednesday, May 18, at the Irby Funeral Home in Rector.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, May 19, at the Evangelical Methodist Church in Hargrave Corner with Brother Freddie Barker officiating.
Burial will follow in the Woodland Heights Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Ed Gardner, Buddy Dills, Terry Dills, Chris Gardner, Tim Gardner, Greg Dills, Kevin Murray and Corbin Hill.
