Joe Bankhead, of Kennett, son of the late Henry Bankhead and Mary Bankhead, was born Nov. 2, 1917, in Clarksville, Mo., and departed this life Wednesday, March 2, 2011, in Kennett, at the age of 93 years.

Joe married Katherine Jones on July 11, 1941. Katherine preceded him in death March 31, 1998. He was also preceded in death by three brothers.

Survivors include one son, James Lewis Bankhead and Rebecca, of Pinehurst, N.C.; one daughter, Terry Jo Garrison and Dr. N.A. Garrison, Jr., of Montgomery, Ala.; seven grandchildren, Noel Keith Bankhead, Nicholas Andrew Bankhead, Brian Keith Mitchell, Joseph Blake Mitchell, Kerri Renee Jones, Trey Garrison and Candice Martin, and other relatives and many friends.

Mr. Bankhead graduated from Paynesville, Mo. High School in 1934. He attended Westminster College in Fulton, Mo., the University of Missouri School of Journalism in Columbia, Mo., and the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts.

He enrolled in the United States Air Corp in 1941, as a Flying Cadet, graduating as 2nd Lieutenant and was subsequently promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in 1946. He served as a Flight Instructor in single and twin-engine aircraft throughout WWII in Texas, Arizona and Illinois flight bases.

He was a pilot for Braniff Airlines prior to moving to Kennett, from Dallas in 1947 and becoming Sales Manager of the fledgling Radio Station KBOA in July of 1947. Later he was affiliated with the Wm. B. Tanner Advertising conglomerate in Memphis, Tenn., where he was a Senior Vice President, Director of Libraries, and Director of Production. He returned to Kennett in 1978, where he continued to reside.

He had no religious affiliation.

The family requests that any memorials be directed to the local VNA Hospice.

Burial was in Memorial Gardens Cemetery at Kennett.
