Dr. Alan Gubin

Tuesday, February 15, 2011

Dr. Alan Sterling Gubin, 84, of Caruthersville, Mo., passed away Sunday, Feb. 6, 2011, in Memphis, Tenn., surrounded by his family and friends.

Dr. Gubin was born Dec. 24, 1926, to Faye and Sydney Gubin. His father was a physician in New York City and later served as a physician in the Army. His wife, Freda Gubin, his brother, Morton Gubin, three sons, Steven, Barry and David, and his six grandchildren, Cassidy, Carly, Cody, Jacob, Sarah and Emma Gubin survive him.

Dr. Gubin graduated from the University of North Carolina and received his Medical Degree from the University of Tennessee. He moved to Caruthersville in 1957, where he practiced Pediatrics and Family medicine until a few days before he passed away. Dr. Gubin is known for his hard work and dedication to his patients, as well as his enormous amount of charity work and community service. He is an icon in Caruthersville and all of the surrounding areas.

Dr. Gubin pioneered the Head Start program 30 years ago. Serving as the Head Start Medical Consultant, he traveled many miles to examine, treat, and refer children to Delta Area Economic Opportunity centers.

Dr. Gubin was elected and served on the Caruthersville School Board of Education for 18 years. He gave free medical exams for high school athletes, as well as SAFE exams on children who were suspected to have been physically or sexually abused.

Dr. Gubin is most proud of his three sons, who followed in his footsteps to practice medicine. He is not only adored by his six grandchildren, but also by every child who grew up in Caruthersville.

Dr. Gubin lived to work. He was never too busy for a patient, a friend, or even a stranger. He was an amazing role model by showing us his happiness came from giving and caring for others. He didn't need words to let someone know he cared. His actions said it all.

We will miss his wonderful smile, his amazing hugs, his big appetite, and his wonderful giving heart.
