Kennett's Jade Caldwell goes for the ball during the Indians' varsity win over Delta C-7 on Monday.
The junior varsity kicked off the night and the Lady Indians had a battle on their hands, but they stepped up in the third and decisive set to win two sets to one over the Lady Chargers (25-12, 19-25, 25-21).
Kennett head coach Laura Ort says that although the JV weren't at their top form, it was good for them to come out, play hard and win their season opener. "Our JV is a very young team and it showed tonight in the way they played," Ort said. "Despite some mistakes made that we'll be working on throughout the season, we got the win and it's good to start out the season with a victory."
Kennett's Lara Abmeyer sets the ball during the Indians' junior varsity win against Delta C-7 on Monday.
The Lady Indians won the first set, despite not gaining their first lead until late in the set, but did just enough to take the early set lead.
The second set turned out to be a back-and-forth battle until the Lady Indians took control late in the game by capitalizing on mistakes made by Delta C-7.
Kennett's Audrey Winn led the team with six kills on the night with Morgan Pickens right behind her with four. Jamie Jarrett led all Lady Indians with 11 digs agains Delta C-7 with Mackenzie Carr adding seven more on the night. Winn and Tiffany Washington both had two blocks on the night and Jade Caldwell had 17 assists to lead the Lady Indians in that category.
Ort said that she was glad that her team started off the season with a win. "Obviously we're pleased to come out here and win," Ort said. "Most of our girls on varsity haven't played on the varsity level before and it was like we had six new kids out there before, but overall they did well tonight and we're glad to get this win."
"Credit has to be given to Delta C-7," Ort said about their opening night opponent. "They never gave up and forced us to play our hardest tonight."
When it comes to improvements for this team, Ort said that it's all about being relaxed on the court and staying focused. "The girls learned tonight that they just have to get comfortable out there with one another and just play the game the way we know to," Ort said "We have to get better at serve and receive and just staying focused. "I believe that the more experience and playing time these girls get the better we're going to get."
The Lady Indians will take on Dexter today at the KHS gym at 6 p.m. and then will host Charleston on Thursday at 6 p.m.
