The Kennett Board of Education presented commendations to two individuals and recognized South Elementary School for meeting Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) on the Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) Test.

Jan Sanders, a long-time staff member for the district, was presented a commendation for "exemplary service to the Kennett School District." Also receiving a commendation was Kennett School District student Judith Carter, who was recognized for achieving perfect attendance all three years while a student at Kennett Middle School.

Prior to the closing of the meeting, the board took a moment to recognize South Elementary School for meeting all 10 criteria on the MAP Test, putting the campus one step closer to getting out from under the "restructuring" level of school improvement.

"We took our licks several years ago," said Board Member Ralph Hemann. "Compared to the 10 schools in the area, we are second to the top. We are making strong efforts."

"[South Elementary] met all 10 of AYP," said Board Vice President Matthew Poole. "I'm really impressed with how hard they are working."

Additional information on South Elementary School's achievement will be published in a future edition of the Daily Dunklin Democrat.

Following the discussion on South, the board closed into executive session, in which it approved Ken Garland as the volunteer sponsor for the junior and senior classes, approved the termination of Wendy Harrison, Kennett Career and Technology Center (KCTC) secretary, and voted to hire June Beck as the new KCTC secretary.

In other matters, the board:

* Approved the bus routes and board lunch schedule for the 2010-2011 school year;

* Appointed Brandon Jones to approve the substitute teacher list for the upcoming school year;

* Adopted the Board Member Conflict of Interest and Financial Disclosure policy;

* Approved the various Program Evaluations;

* Approved the 2010-2011 Student Handbooks;

* Approved a district-wide security system upgrade at a cost of $9,558.60, as submitted by N.E.T. Systems, Inc.
