Senior Holcomb Hornets' volleyball players (from left) Elizabeth Weaver, Taylor Moody and Britlyn Pikey will look to lead their team to success in 2010
Head coach Gentry Vancil has had her team working hard in preparation of, what she hopes, is a successful 2010 season. "This team has been working hard these first couple of days of camp," Vancil said. "Despite the fact that it's early to tell how this season will go, we're like every team out there, working hard every day and getting ready for the season."
Along with the hard work comes excitement for the start of the season, and the excitement is there for the Lady Hornets.
"We are so excited for this season to start," Vancil said. "We have a lot to prove this year because we were disappointed with last year's record. We believe that this is a year of redemption for us."
This team has three seniors on it's roster, Elizabeth Weaver, Taylor Moody and Britlyn Pikey, who have been playing with each other for as long as they can remember. These seniors hope that they can be leaders on a winning team in 2010.
"I've got three great seniors who are great leaders on this team," Vancil said. "These girls have really stepped it up this year and have proven to me that they are capable of leading this team to victory. The best thing about their leadership is that they lead by example and they are always talking positively to their teammates."
One aspect that most teams, this time of year, put emphasis on is conditioning. Vancil says that while she does want to prepare her team for a long and grueling season, she feels that just making them run isn't the key to their success on the court.
"When it comes to conditioning, I condition my girls through drills," Vancil said. "While most teams are probably just having their players run sprints, I want to make my team do drills that not only condition them, but will help improve their game."
The main goal on this team's mind, according to Vancil, is to win the district title and be playing in the state playoffs. "Our goal, just like every other team in the area, is to hang a championship banner at the end of the season," Vancil said. "I believe that if we just go out and play hard and finish hard every game, we will be successful this season."
The Lady Hornets will open their season on September 2nd at 6 p.m. at home against Southland.
