According to Kennett Humane Officer Tena Petix, at approximately 4:10 p.m., on Tuesday afternoon, she got a call about pit bull trying to bite students near Kennett Middle School.
Petix said upon arrival, Kennett Reserve Officer Glen Harris had already secured the animal. As she and Harris were talking by the KMS gymnasium, Petix said a guy came and aggressively approached them and said he was going to take his dog and leave.
Petix said she asked for identification but the individual refused, and began cursing. At this point, Petix said the individual told her she could take the animal, and shoved it at her.
"He jumped in his van and he drives down Electric Street, all the way to Frisco Street, backwards, as fast as he can go," Petix said.
Petix said she anticipated problems at the dog pound following the incident, and had the dog housed at an off-site location.
On Wednesday afternoon, Petix said she was tipped off that someone was trying to break into the dog pound.
Petix said she and Kennett Officer Alan Campbell begin to make their way to the pound and catch the suspect "red handed."
The individual was then pulled over in front of the Daily Dunklin Democrat office on First Street and served with a summons.
Petix said the individual is going to be charged with trespassing on city property, breaking into the pound, and violating the dangerous dog and leash law ordinances.
The individuals name is being held pending the filing of formal charges.

This is just ignorant.. dangerous dogs my butt! People are just stupid!
you have not yet . i,m scared somebody going to get in alot of trouble . my can,t we just all get aiong . if chain in yard in a fence in yard .poeple has no right to tell them any thing unless they are paying their taxs . think this just a bunch of bull if its kill or something like that ,thats something else.but the one,s that has not done any . leave them alone. poeple has rights .i know for a fact my dog has never bit anyone . he is on a chain behind a lock fench my fench is 6foot .
IF..and that is a BIG "IF". The dog was trying to attack people,( which I don't believe it was. It was probably just wanting attention and wanting to play,) it should have been seized by the dog pound. All the pits that have been in a fighting ring, or have mauled an animal or bit anyone should be put down. But not ALL pitbulls are bad. You train them right, you will have yourself a wonderful family pet.
I boyfriend had 2 bit bulls, one was aggressive, so my so called "boyfriend" shot her. The situation was not the dogs fault, she was put in this situation to where dogs do what was any animal would do. Her sister was put in the same situation, she he was going to shoot her too, I told him (long story short) he wasn't. The dog was a very sweet loveable dog, my grandkids could play with her, and I didn't have to worry. The worse she could do was lick you to death. Our insurance company said we had to get rid of her or they wouldn't insure the house. So I gave her to a friend of mine. I haven't seen or heard about the dog since, the "friend" won't tell me anything about her. Pit bulls are given a bad rap, it all depends on how you handle the dog. A lot, and I mean a lot of people don't deserve to have dogs of this calibar. They get these dogs and dogs like them, thinking they are big shots, "OOH, I have a big bad dog, I'm big bad too", only thing you are doing is getting the poor animal killed. Get your head out of your butt and think about the animal.
has anybody out there seen dukes of harzrad . or heard the song harpervally p.t.a. if you have not look out your door . !!!!!
I,m sorry i retired to here i talk to some people up north to move here buy a home here .i call and told them what,s going on they said NO THE WOULD NOT MOVE HERE .they said they would not even vist here. they have a pit to .
It is about the most stupid thing I've ever heard. I am surprised and perplexed by the action of the council in regards to this ordinance.
Am I the only one in Kennett who thinks Pit Bulls should be banned?
Pit Bull owners are ofen cowards with huge guilt complexes. Who knows about this guy? Pit Bulls should be banned. Period!
I can't comment on the personal traits of the Pit Bull owner, but I have seen too many Pits, Rottweilers, and Dobermans trying to chew their way through chain link fences to get to me as I was walking down a sidewalk minding my own business.
If news footage of 2 year-olds chewed up and killed is not enough to illustrate the danger of so-called "bad dogs", then what is?
I can't comment on the personality traits of Pit Bull owners, I just know from personal experience that occasionally as I have walked down sidewalks, there would be backyard monsters (ie Pits, Dobermans, Rottweilers, etc) desperately trying to gnaw their way through chain link fences in order to "greet" me.
Anyone who has read articles of how 2 year olds were chewed up and/or killed by so-called "bad dogs" should wonder about the advisability of keeping such animals.
thank you i,m keep my dog i live in bad hood people like,s to miss around my house . tire to get in my back door ,my shed . no thank you . they get in my house i,m disable . i can,t fight but they would get a surprise . he dose n,t bit it,s just knowing maybe it would scare them. he,s not a full blooded pit . but he is mine .
Why should Pit Bulls be Banned?...If you're going to go that far, Go ahead and ban the Lab, the Dalmation and the Golden Retriever. Because they have a high bite rate too. The only time these dogs get a rap is when they do something bad. You never hear the good things they do. The people who think they should be BANNED from Kennett probably has NEVER owned one. I think you should get a puppy, raise it. Watch how it grows, loves, and how loyal they are. Then say that. Until you know ANYTHING at all about OWNING and RAISING one. You can't really Judge a book by its cover.
I just got off the phone with higher office he said . unless your dog is dangerous they can take it on a warrant. he said its our 4th amment rigth . ithink i spell that right.not sure. but has to have ataked or done harm . if not contack your .sentoror congressman or lawer.
the fouth amendment. the right of the people to be secrure in their person, houses, paper, and effects against unreasonable seachs and sezures shall not be violated and NO WARRANTS shall issue , but upon probable cause.,supported by oath or affimation. , and particulary descriding the place to be seached and pearson or things to be sized!!!!!!!!!
As a dog trainer, I will admit that it is sometimes difficult even for me to argue that Pit Bulls are a vicious breed when popular television shows like Pit Boss and Dog Whisperer are touting the benefits of the breed. What's the difference? Why can't we have the same loving pit bulls, Rottweilers, Dobermans, etc., that Caesar has on his show? Because of the time and money--I'm sorry, but the man makes millions and dedicates his life to his beautiful animals. He has a large complex for his pack and his clients probably don't pay him an hourly fee like my clients. Instead, they sign agreements to appear on his television program, in all likelihood, they make money to be on his show.
Ultimately, many of the pit bulls that we see on these television programs end of being placed into special homes where the new owners are continuously trained to care for the needs of their new dogs. These dogs ARE NOT living on chains behind 6ft fences. These dogs are highly intelligent (as are ALL dogs in general) and need constant mental and emotional stimulation as well as appropriate exercise or they will ultimately develop depression and/or aggressive tendencies.
None of this is intended to be a slam against any of us, we are all hard working people, we get up and go to work everyday--many of us work more than one job and all of us pay taxes. But this is a fact that works against us when it comes to pet ownership. None of us would leave a human baby alone at home while we go to work--so why would we put our dog on a chain for 8-12 hours a day and think it's okay?
There is a reason certain breeds are termed 'vicious breeds', it is because historically, they have been bred to protect and guard as well as to attack, Romans used Rottweilers as war (and herding) dogs. Dogs heel on the left because swords/weapons hung on the right. There is no shame in their genetics but people, everyday people, need to understand these genetics in order to live with and manage genetic tendencies. And I'll tell you another fact, the dog that has probably tormented more pet owners lately is Jack Russell terrier. The difference is, the Jack Russell doesn't have a bite/kill instinct, unless you're a rodent, of course, otherwise the JR will just drive you crazy.
Senath is not the first town to face the 'bad dog ban' debate. I don't read this paper everyday, so if bite statistics per population have been printed, I'm sorry I've missed it but obviously, people are nervous and when people are scared to walk down the town's streets, things need to change. We live in the country for a reason, and as citizens of small towns, we need to respect each other's rights. We all have the right to pursue happiness as long as it doesn't cause harm to others. Take your dog inside, if your pup is as wonderful as you say it is, why would you keep it outside 24-7 anyway? Cuddle up with it on the couch...but don't let it torment other people.
If you are in the market for a new dog, remember the all American Heinz 57, get him or her spayed/neutered, crate train it, socialize it and love it. If you want a dog for protection, most would-be robbers will turn away from your home simply at the sound of barking.
Well put, Bluebird.
Couldn't have said it better bluebird!
Any dog is capable of unpredictable behavior no matter the breed but the odds of suffering severe or fatal injuries are far more likely in an attack by a Pit Bull that does decide to attack than any other breed of dog. Over the years I have seen numerous children choppered from our local ER to trauma centers due to major injuries to the face/neck area inflicted by pits who have been the family pet for years and never offered to bite before.
If a person wants to keep a potentially dangerous animal in a community that has banned them then that person needs to move to a more accepting community or else comply with the law and get rid of the dog IMO.
i have one who is part pit ,lad.blueheeler he goes out to pottie heon lead behind a fence.gate lock. i have another one he,s chow hes in the fence on chain. cars broken in egg cars broken to sheds .my dogs let me know some body messin around.peoplecomes in mine. well they just dont need to be there. im not taken chances with my life. no thank you i,ll keep my dogs . sorry for the way i feel . you can,t trust people when there in your yard 3 and 4 in the morning messing with things they dont need to .
