A total of seven applicants from within the district were interviewed for the position, with South Elementary Fifth-grade Instructor Richard Leeker being selected to fill the void.
When asked about the position, Leeker said he was excited to be offered the position.
"I was excited," Leeker said. "I think this is going to be a great opportunity. It is great to serve my school and this town, which has been nothing but great to me.
"I've taught for five years and to be able to be a principal is going to give me a chance to reach a larger amount of kids. That is something I really like doing now and this is something I will be able to do on a larger scale."
Also during the executive session portion of the meeting, the board accepted letters of retirement from Sue Warrington, South Elementary reading teacher; Susan Baker, high school art teacher; Steve Turner, a district electrician; and Jimmy Lebo, maintenance and bus driver.
The board then voted to employ Courtney Rhew as a full-time Spanish teacher at the high school, accepted the resignation of Phillip Campbell, high school communication arts teacher, and rehired the certified faculty members.
The next Kennett Board of Education meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 20.
