National Consumer Protection Week (March 8-12, 2010), will find a local focus as Missouri's Attorney General, Chris Koster, meets with area seniors regarding the types of scams and fraudulent activities that are being perpetrated in Missouri, the Bootheel, and across the nation.

On Wednesday, March 10, at 12:30 p.m., Koster will visit the Kennett OAKS Senior Center to share his concerns for senior safety. Additionally, the attorney general will make suggestions regarding how his office can aid seniors if they become a victim of fraudulent activity.

Public Education Director, Tom Dirkin, will also be on hand at the event to provide insight regarding specific scams that have circulated the region recently. Dirkin will provide Kennett senior residents with tips to avoid becoming a victim of such bogus activity.

Today's scammers are reaching out to seniors at increasingly alarming rates through various means including the Internet, telephone and U.S. mail. Senior Citizens, according to the Attorney General's office, are often a scammers first target, which is why Koster has become involved in educating this particular group during National Consumer Protection Week.

Sharon Montgomery at Kennett OAKS Senior Center can provide details regarding this public event to anyone interested in attending. Contact her at (573) 888-9852.
