Lucille McElrath, 88, of Malden died Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010, at Malden Nursing & Rehab Center in Malden. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Malden, where she was the longest standing member. A devoted church member, she served teacher in the nursery for many years. She also enjoyed raising chickens and ducks and many individuals referred to her as "the chicken lady." She cared for many individuals, especially a person who was suffering from muscular dystrophy.

Born in Gray Ridge on April 10, 1921, she was the daughter of the late William and Sadie Pennington. On Feb. 26, 1943, in Malden, she was united in marriage to Roy Lee McElrath, who preceded her in death on Feb. 9, 2007.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Jackie Ray McElrath; six brothers, John M., Burtis, Adrian, Bud L., Lloyd and Jack Penningto; and four sisters, Goldie M. Glover, Bonnie Bunch, Pansy Midkiff and Deloris Everman.

Survivors include three sons, Roy Lee McElrath, Jr., and wife, Julia, of Little Rock, Ark., Calvin Eugene McElrath and wife, Kathy, of Maryland and John David McElrath and wife, Cecilia, of Newport News, Va.; one daughter, Lara Lynn Woolverton of Malden, eight grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Visitation was held Monday, March 1, at Landess Funeral Home in Malden. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, March 2, in the funeral home chapel with the Revs. Ken Goodwin and John Bowlby officiating. Interment was in Memorial Park Cemetery at Malden. Landess Funeral Home of Malden was in charge of arrangements.
