Charges have been filed by the Dunklin County Prosecuting Attorney's office against a convicted State of Missouri Sexual Offender in association with a recent case of sexual assault to a juvenile in Senath, Mo.

Steven Ray Abbott, 27, of Dunklin County, who was convicted of 1st Degree Sexual Misconduct in 2002, was recently arrested following an investigation by the Senath Police Department.

According to Assistant Dunklin County Prosecuting Attorney Jonce Chidister, Abbott has been charged with 1st Degree Statutory Sodomy and 1st Degree Child Molestation.

He added that the Statutory Sodomy is for deviate sexual intercourse with a person less than 14-years-old and is an unclassed term with a possible sentence of five to 30 years in prison.

Chidister noted that the Child Molestation charge is for subjecting a child, less than 15-years-old, to sexual contact and is a Class B Felony with a possible sentence of five to 15 years in prison.

During the investigation of the case, Senath Officer Jerad Callahan transported the victim to Cape Girardeau, Mo., for a SAFE-CARE (Sexual Assault Forensic Examination-Child Abuse Resource and Education) exam, according to Senath Chief of Police Omar Karnes.

The SAFE-CARE exams are performed by physicians and nurse practitioners who have received special training in the examination and interview of children who may have been sexually assaulted or physically abused or neglected, according to the Missouri Department of Social Services.

The organization added that the SAFE-CARE Network also helps to reduce the trauma experienced by children who are subjected to sexual abuse or physical abuse/neglect.

Following a warrant being released for Abbott's arrest, he was apprehended. The arrest occurred after a foot pursuit, and Abbott is currently being held in the Dunklin County Jail with a bond of $100,000 cash only.

Upon Abbott's arrest, he attempted to flee from police officers, according to Callahan. Due to this attempt, felony resisting arrest charges will be filed.

Abbott and those like him can't be "cured." He needs a life sentence. Parents should be careful not to subject a child to such un-evolved creatures. Parents are often too forgiving (stupid?) in allowing known molesters, whom they seem to like, for other reasons and/or uses, to be around their children.

Should've been shot for trying to escape. That is the only "cure" for these sickos.

Where were the parents? This could have been a very permiscous teenage girl. Remember people are innocent until proven guilty. I think that the records of these so-called innocent children should be admitted at these trials. Some children are as guilty as the men accused of molesting. Have you seen the way teen girls dress? Many look older than 21 and also act the same. Parents should be held at fault also.
